Chakra Series: Solar Plexus

Chakras are energy centers that exist in and around our physical bodies. Each chakra has a unique location and is associated with a different gland, psychological function, element, energy state, and more.

Here's a bit more on the Solar Plexus Chakra:

It name, Manipura means "lustrous gem." The element is FIRE. It is located around the navel to solar plexus area of the body and can observed through the process of digestion: food consumed is transformed into energy to fuel the body.

The Solar Plexus Chakra is also tied to will, power, and the direction of energy. The task of this chakra is to overcome inertia -- using will power and energy to direct action to gain momentum or find stillness.

Creating balance in this chakra calls for noticing where you own your power vs giving it away. Like the perfect fire, there is a delicate balance of too little or too much heat -- exercising control to keep it burning without getting out of hand.

Here are a few ways to check in with your Solar Plexus Chakra:

  • Do something different - if you're sluggish, get moving; if you're constantly moving, be still.

  • Laugh! It will strengthen abdominal muscles and bring joy!

  • Core work of any kind will connect you to this area of the body.

  • Lie on your belly and take deep breaths. Notice how the belly expands and pushes into the surface below as you breath in and how it contracts with your exhale.

  • Feel your strength - Run, power walk, lift weights, or take a hot yoga class -- whatever encourages you to feel strong!
