Chakra Series: Third Eye

Read on to learn about the Third Eye Chakra:

The name, Ajna means "perceive," "command," or "beyond wisdom" in Sanskrit. The element is LIGHT. It is located in the eyes, face, forehead and base of the skull.

It is your vision, both of the outside world and the internal vision of the intuition and imagination. It is your inner knowing and ideas.

Here are a few ways to explore your Third Eye Chakra:

  • Relax in child's pose or crocodile pose. Allow your forehead to connect to your hands, the surface beneath you, or a prop. Gently rock your forehead side to side for a "third eye massage."

  • Practice eye movement exercises. Start with eyes closed. Open your eyes and gaze straight ahead. Slowly move eyes up and down, then side to side, without moving your head. Play around with looking as far up/left to down/right and the reverse. Draw big circles with your eyes. Then rest with eyes closed to finish. (This is great after a lot of time looking at a computer/phone screen.)

  • Listen to your intuition. When do you sense that something will happen? Or that a certain choice correct, even if you can't explain why? Pay attention to when you listen to these nudges or not and how things turn out.

  • Try a mindful color medication. With eyes closed, imagine each of the colors of the rainbow, one at a time. See if you can call to mind different objects for each color.

  • Practice visualization. With eyes closed, visualize a time and place where you had a positive meaningful experience. Recall as many sensory details as you can: sights, sounds, smells, temperature, tastes, feelings, etc. This practice can create a shift in your physical and mental state that make you feel like you're having the experience again. You can also use visualization to imagine goals or things you're working toward achieving.
